Celebrating Pride: Personal Reflections on Allyship

I never understood why others are so concerned about what others do with their private parts. Growing up Muslim, it was pressed upon me to wait until marriage to have sex. I heard all of the aunties gossiping about the women they considered promiscuous and concerning themselves with others virtue. And I have always had the same thought, how exactly is that any of our business.

I applied the same thought to any conversion regarding the LGBT+ community. I could care less about how another human uses their body and who they love. It still baffles me that this is such a huge conversation topic, along with the right to choose. My question until the end of time, how’s it your business how another person chooses to live their life?

I have always considered myself an ally, but I must admit, I was a flawed ally. Although, I was not spreading hate, I looked at the entire conversation as none of my business, without taking the time to fully see the effects of homophobia. And after one simple conversation with my therapist at the time, my eyes were opened and I became an ally out loud! It actually infuriates some of the conversations and talking points to villlanize a community, that as a whole, just want to exist and love who they love.

I can not recall, what year I began attending the Pride Parade, but the first time I did, it left a strong positive impression on me. I felt so much joy watching people celebrate, embrace, and take up space for their identity, that ordinarily society tries to minimize and silence. And this past weekend, I had the honor of participating and marching in the World Pride Parade! I was able to walk, dance, and cheer alongside so many incredible people! I was proudly being an ally out loud, reminding the people, the rainbow is here to stay!

I will never forget this past weekend, and it was extra special because I was walking beside one of my best friends. I love and appreciate him so much, and I hope to always show up for him the way he consistently does for me!

At the end of the day we all just want love and to create the life of our dreams. We should not be making life harder for our fellow human over whatever self righteous principles you believe in. Let’s spread love and positivity, and learn to embrace the difference that makes our existence colorful!

Happy Pride 🌈
