Reflecting on Reminders of Him: A Journey of Perspective

Once again, my opinions have been solicited, and I took a peek inside someone else’s journal.

I had the privilege of prescreening Reminders of Him, a classic story that invites you to reflect and embrace shifting perspectives; the narrative isn’t always as it appears.

It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed a good chick flick without any crazy thrillers or surprise plot twists. With much respect, the movie followed the classic formula with a happy ending, which I’m sure many predicted in the midst of the film, just what my nervous system needed. Throughout the film, I reflected on watching all my teen movies with my father and on us being on the edge of our seats, already predicting what would happen next.

As you all know, I am opinionated and often need to step back and shift my perspective. While reviewing the film, I  also need to extend more grace until I have the full context. I’ll admit I sometimes judge a book by its cover, and after reading the context, have a different opinion. This book adaptation was no different.

I didn’t start the film rooting for Kenna, actually never did lol, but throughout watching the movie, I began to give her grace and understanding. I respect misunderstood souls; we are mostly seeking grace and respect, not to be understood. In this case, she was seeking something deeper, her legacy, a human formed from love, that was also misunderstood.

“There was a before you, and there was a during you. For some reason, I never thought there would be an after you.”

I don’t believe in spoilers. You have to watch the movie to unlock the multiple love stories and the depth and layers beneath the surface. It is more than a clichéd chick flick; it’s a classic formula that reminds the public that the goal is never perfection but improvement. I find the best way is through pure storytelling, stemming from the safe place of a journal.

The only plot twist: Reminders of Him will be released in theaters on Friday, March 13th.

The film doesn’t try to reinvent the genre—it simply reminds us why the formula works, to give your nervous system a rest in the face of the world’s unpredictability.

And of course, share your thoughts. Did you have a change of opinion while watching?
