Lessons from Creed III: Finding Self-Acceptance

Y’all, I am back with another movie review! Creed III is phenomenal; it is one of those movies where you feel like you are part of the film, even if you haven’t watched the previous movies. The theme of the movie is relationships. How to balance all the relationships in Adonis Creed’s life while trying to heal from past traumas.

The film tackles a friendship dynamic that many people can relate to. Childhood friends Adonis Creed (Micheal B. Jordan) and Damian (Jonathan Majors), who were more like brothers, separated and had vastly different life paths. I immensely related to Adonis in this film because guilt, shame, and a sense of loyalty led to many of his decisions.

It is a beautiful depiction of Adonis’s healing journey; we were given more insight into his childhood while living in the group home and the trauma he suppressed until his past was staring him in the face. I felt and could see him being triggered; the flashbacks and emotions he’s subdued all those years wash over him like a tidal wave.

Damian was a great friend to Adonis when they were children, but now they are men, and things have drastically changed. We witness how Adonis relationship with Damian affected all his relationships, including his sense of self. While watching Creed III, two life lessons that I just learned the hard way were reinforced. “Let go of what was, and accept what is,” meaning the past is in the past; now it is time to stop living there, accept the present, and don’t let it mess up your future. Also, “he is telling you who he is. Believe him”, something my great-grandmother used to tell me. When people show their true colors, believe them and don’t make excuses because they know exactly what they are doing.

Creed III is Micheal B. Jordan’s director debut film; you can feel the passion and an overwhelming sense of Adonis telling his story, compared to the previous films. The film drops so many life lessons and gems; everyone should take notes. Initially, when I watched the movie, I felt the absence of Rocky. I wanted some representation, but my views have changed. The film was about Adonis, his healing journey, and proving to himself that he has earned and deserves the legacy he has continued being a Creed. He was destined for greatness with or without Rocky and his father’s last name! The moment he dug deep, forgave himself, and believed in himself almost brought me to tears.

The movie is powerful, inspirational, and beautiful, which left me feeling unstoppable. Like all great dramas, a bit of comedic release is appreciated. This time it left me with the standard for my future household. “The women run this house; I just live here,” stated Adonis, and I absolutely love the mindset.

Creed III will be released in theaters on March 3, 2023, and y’all must see it; you will not regret it! Then we can really dive in and spill the tea!
