Masters of the Air: A Military Drama Worth Watching

Y’all, I have been to war and back, and it’s time to spill the tea! I have watched and reviewed Apple TV+’s new series, Masters of the Air, which is now streaming on Apple TV.

Masters of the Air follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. From the first episode, you feel like you’re in the war with them and going through all the trials and tribulations.

Now, y’all know by now I don’t do spoilers, but some may slip as I give my review. I am a huge military buff, and for all of my other military fanatics and historians, this is the show for you! By the second mission, you’re fully invested, and with each mission, you feel the anxiety and fear, and of course, with war comes significant loss. It’s always sad when your favorite characters go, but that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

I loved that the show didn’t only focus on the pilots; you became acquainted with the entire base and each operation role. We saw the Airmen fight in the skies, but we also experienced the terrifying reality of escaping from the plane and landing on foreign soil. I must admit, more than the action scenes, I enjoyed watching the sequence of events of the men trying to escape enemy territory or plot against the enemy as prisoners of war.

There is no way there could be a show about WWII pilots without mentioning the Tuskegee Airmen. I patiently awaited their arrival for the entire series. When they showed up, I was not too disappointed. Of course, it couldn’t match my expectations, but this show wasn’t about their story; they were given the respect they deserved, so I happily enjoyed the rest of the series.

Of course, there was an undertone of love stories, but I became more invested in the scandalous affairs. Actually, one, but I felt for all parties involved, I don’t believe there’s ever an excuse for cheating, but this is war. Y’all are just going to have to watch the show and find out.

However, if I could give one complaint, there were kids in almost every episode that I could have lived without.
