For the most part, I have found success and a good time eating my edibles and on my cannabis journey. Cannabis is primarily a source of laughter and relief for the nervous system, but not always. Too much THC can cause intense anxiety and paranoia, now let me tell y’all how I found that out the hard way!
About once a month, I like to have a me day, where I stay in a hotel, get significantly pampered, binge-watch movies/ shows, and eat all the food I desire! I typically eat an indica or hybrid edible, high dose, of course. Still, the dispensary only had sativa, and in my typical fashion, I thought What’s the worst that can happen.
Well, taking about 80 mg of a Sativa gummy caused me severe anxiety and paranoia. I felt like an elephant was taking a nap on my chest, and my mind was racing with all the worst-case scenarios that could happen to me. Keep in mind, I’m in a hotel waiting for about three different orders, and with each knock, my nervous system got worse! At this point, the elevations just continue to climb, and I just wanted to be sober again. After the last order was delivered, I was able to pull myself together enough to take a bath and play my nature sounds, which helped calm my brain and, in turn, calm me down.
At some point, I passed out because I was no longer elevated; I was high! However, it was a valuable lesson, and in my opinion, life is the best teacher. I am now aware of a side effect, and going to take them seriously, and tips for the next time I partake in too much THC. Because let’s be real, we know it’s going to happen again.
5 Tips for When You’ve Had Too Much THC
Breathe — slow and deep.
Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Focus on your breath to remind your body you’re safe.
Change your environment.
Step into a calm, familiar space — dim lighting, fresh air, or even outside under the sky. The shift helps your mind reset.
Hydrate.
Sip water or herbal tea slowly. It helps ground your body and combats dry mouth or lightheadedness.
Eat something light.
A small snack — fruit, crackers, or bread — can help your body metabolize THC faster and ease dizziness.
Remind yourself: this will pass.
THC effects are temporary. Say it aloud: “I’m okay, this feeling is temporary.” Affirmations can calm racing thoughts.
